Terrace House

On a bluff overlooking a rural valley west of Portland, the Terrace House offers both prospect and refuge, opening to out to distant views of the landscape and framing a protected inner courtyard. The massing folds around individual pavilions housing public spaces, guest suite, primary suite, and creative studio. Each side is a variation on a theme with open corners, offering subtly different experiences of the landscape, views, and natural light with varying degrees of privacy. The house steps down the hill offering exterior terraces used for creative work, sunbathing, and taking in the staggering Coast Range views.

As the copper cladding ages, it melds with the natural tones of the landscape, amber hues in fall, steely blue in winter, and warm complimentary tones to the lush greens of spring and summer. The interiors are detailed and airy, lined with whitewashed woods, textured to capture sunlight.

An abstracted form nestled in a native landscape, both striking and subtle making it of the place and slightly out of place.
